Yorkon has completed a building for Christ College in the Brecon Beacons National Park – one of Britain’s oldest educational establishments – in just five months

Designed by P+HS Architects, the two-storey building expands the science facilities at the school. Sixteen steel-framed building modules were made in York and craned into position during the school holidays.

Two physics and two biology labs, a sixth-form project room, and lab technician’s rooms are grouped around a double-height atrium that functions as an additional teaching area and exhibition space. This central β€œstreet” also allows pupils to move through the space at peak times and gather informally before and after lessons. It has a number of sustainable features, such as solar water heating, natural ventilation and high levels of insulation. The building has been designed to be adaptable to change: the internal walls are non load-bearing and there are clear internal spans of up to 12m, so teaching spaces and labs can be easily reconfigured.
