Architect designs β€œlight-box” facade for iconic building

Architect BDP has unveiled its plans for regeneration of Oldham’s historic Town Hall.

The grade II-listed building was built in 1894 but has been closed since the mid 1990s. The new plans incorporate a cinema, cafes and retail spaces.

The glass side extension has been designed to provide an atrium where people can move between levels on the sloping site. The β€˜light box’ would also light up at night to enliven the city centre.

Jim McMahon, Oldham council leader, said: β€œThis is an exciting opportunity to bring a fantastic building back into use and create a venue for the borough that is very different to other out-of-town cinema developments – something we can all be proud of.”
