How it was judged 鈥� and who made the shortlist

Finding the best of the best

For the first time this year, the HSE鈥檚 Working Well Together Awards merged with 性吧电台鈥檚 Health and Safety Awards to create the definitive awards ceremony to celebrate excellence in this crucial arena. In doing so, they also created the top prize for health and safety within the construction industry 鈥� the Working Well Together Health and Safety Organisation of the Year.

All of the shortlisted candidates were eligible for this 鈥渂est of the best鈥� prize, so the judges had a tough job when faced with all the remarkable firms whose achievements are outlined in the previous pages. And it was not just about who had walked away with the most trophies on the night, who had impressed the panel with the most spectacular entry, or who had been shortlisted again and again.

No, the winner of this award had to be the organisation that most embodied the principles of the Working Well Together campaign 鈥� particularly those of the four Cs: commitment, competence, communication and co-operation 鈥� whether or not it had won in any of the previous categories.

With its groundbreaking initiatives and second-to-none site facilities at the UK鈥檚 biggest construction project, BAA was found to be the organisation that best represented what Working Well Together is really about 鈥� ticking those four Cs boxes again and again. Some of the highlights of this client鈥檚 achievements include: the T5 agreement, a non-adversarial contract that fosters partnering and supply-chain collaboration 鈥� demonstrating WWT鈥檚 requisite co-operation; the 鈥淪afer by Design鈥� initiative, which designs in health and safety from the start of the project 鈥� showing and indeed engendering competence; the 鈥淩espect for People鈥� philosophy, which translates on the ground into the now award-winning welfare and occupational health facilities; an excellent communications programme that includes daily briefings, safety handbooks, posters, site newspaper and safety hotline; and strong leadership with tangible commitment to the welfare of its workforce.
